A leader is a person who has a passion for helping people succeed to the next level and they push for a better future. Leaders should be responsible, respectful, intelligent and brave. People should feel protected and comfortable with the person in charge. This guarantees a successful following. Beowulf and Macbeth were two different types of leaders. Once was a successful leader while the other allowed negative traits to lead him down a path of destruction.
Beowulf was an excellent leader. He protected his people by killing dangerous dragons that threatened his people. Killing these creatures took intelligence and bravery, The type of brave people did not have with them. Beowulf volunteered to see who and what this maniac was that was causing harm in a land far from his own. Because of his courageousness deeds he was eventually king. The kingship came with great responsibility. Beowulf had to step out of his comfort zone to lead the people the right way. He was a positive leader and role model.
Macbeth is an example of an unsuccessful leader because of his manipulative and lack of respect for anyone except his self. Macbeth killed many people to become king. In contrast Beowulf killed to protect his people. Beowulf seems to be more of a leader because in the film Beowulf risked his life to kill dragons so his people would be safe. Macbeth lacks integrity and loyalty to his comrades and to the people of the kingdom. He employs hit seen to kill Banquo, his war buddy all is an effort to stay king. This is not the character trait of a good and successful leader.
A good leader must have integrity; he must be responsible and respectful. Macbeth is very selfish and posses the qualities of a good leader because Beowulf doo plays the qualities of a successful leader because he is respectful compassionate, loyal and responsible.
Beowulf and Macbeth do not share the same mindset about what a true leader is. They do not have the same qualities. While Beowulf was an outstanding king, models demonstrating responsibility, courage and compassion. Macbeth was his opposite. Macbeth does not portray leadership qualities and therefore was destroyed in the end by his followers.

The Who, What, When, When, Where and Why of it all!
A newspaper article will always give very specific pieces of information. It will tell you details related directly to the story being presented. Most of the time it answers the questions who, what, when, where, why and sometimes how. Using one of the stories we have covered, I want you to construct a newspaper article complete with required details. Remember the byline is the writer's name.
Example:
Body Found at the Bazaar!
by Karen Ellison
Today at the east side bazaar in Lower Burma a corpse was found face down in the mud. At this time authorities have not released the name of the man. Witnesses say a group of neighborhood children found the man during a game of street soccer. Authorities have set out in search of a wild elephant seen rummaging through the bazaar earlier that Saturday morning. One child gave these details of what he briefly saw before being shooed away by a group of elderly women:
"The man was sprawled in the mud and his back had the print of an elephant foot". This detail is what sent the constables in search of 10 year old elephant "Sari". Sari's mahout explains that Sari is going through the must season and must have escaped from her chains. Mahout Deshani wishes to express his deepest condolences to the family of the unidentified coolie once he has been identified by family members or through dental records.
In the meantime, authorities continue to search for the wild animal.

The Devil and Tom Walker--Character Analysis
Read the following short story by Washington Irving. You may listen to it only if you have earbuds of your own. Afterwards you are to write a character analysis. In other words, what can you infer about the characters after reading or listening to the story. Tell me whether or not you are using direct or indirect characterizations.
In your second paragraph I want you to provide me with as many themes as possible and give me explanations as to why you feel it is a theme. Once you have done this, go back and read a few of your peers responses and make comments on whether or not you agree or disagree and tell me why. Use the text as proof for your inferences.

I am, I can, I will Poem
The following poem represents a small portion of who I am. This style of poetry is called free expression and gives the author a way to express who they are in a poetic style. Remember this is just a sample. Follow the basic format of beginning and ending each stanza with the words I am, I can and I will. In free expression poetry you DO NOT have to rhyme. Be creative and have fun!
My example:
I am, I can, I will
I am the future I teach
I am here for you if you reach
Reach out and take my hand
Divided we fall together we stand
I am...
I can help you to succeed
But I want you to take the lead
I can be by your side to catch you if you should fall
If you have a problem all you have to do is call
I can be there in your time of need
I can...
I will introduce you to literature, grammar and public speaking
I will show you how to travel to far away places
I will unlock your mind and fill empty spaces
I will listen, discuss, scaffold and debate
My main job is to educate
And I will, I can, I am

The Three Little Pigs--Themes
Create a page discussing a theme from a favorite childhood story. Tell me the name of the story, and what theme is trying to be relayed. Afterwards tell me how you know this is a theme. In other words, what did the author write that makes you feel he is trying to entice you into thinking of this "theme" as a moral?
Example: The Three Little Pigs One of the themes of this story is to always build your future on a firm foundation. I feel the author was trying to tell readers to always be prepared. He demonstrates this point by showing the cause and effects of having a poor foundation. He shows us that because the first 2 little pigs built their houses out of straw and wood they had a poor foundation and therefore when trouble came their way they could not withstand the wind. Their foundations were blown away by the pressures of life. The 3rd little pig planned and created a secure and safe foundation out of brick. When trouble (the wolf) came his way, his foundation stood fast. Now it is your turn. Remember in order to find the theme or moral of a story, you have to be able to look beyond the words and get the "big" picture. Ask yourself, what is the author trying to tell me.
